A regular checkup is the easiest way to keep small problems small. We look over your teeth, gums, and mouth, clean away the buildup brushing can’t reach, and tell you plainly what we see.

Book a checkup if

  • It’s been more than six months since your last visit (or more than six years, we don’t mind)
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
  • A tooth feels sensitive, rough, or different
  • You’re new to the area and need a dentist for the family

How often should you come?

Most people do well with a checkup and clean every six months. If your gums need extra care, your dentist may suggest coming more often; if everything is stable, sometimes less. It’s based on your mouth, not a rule.

What happens at a checkup

    A few questions first

    Any changes to your health or medications, and anything that’s been bothering you. This is also the moment to tell us if you’re nervous.

    A careful look

    We check each tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth. X-rays are taken only when we need to see between or beneath teeth, and we’ll say why first.

    A thorough clean

    Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar, then polishes your teeth smooth. If your gums are tender, we go slower and can use a numbing gel.

    A plain-English summary

    What’s healthy, what to keep an eye on, and any treatment worth considering, with the cost, before you decide anything.

Questions people ask about checkups and cleanings

Will the cleaning hurt?

Most people find a cleaning comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or it’s been a while, tell us. We can work more gently and use a numbing gel where it helps.

Do I need X-rays every visit?

No. How often you need X-rays depends on your own teeth and history. We’ll always explain why before taking one.

Is a checkup covered by insurance?
